Ghosh-lineage hot yoga, rooted in ancient tradition, refined for modern life. Set in the stunning Cumbrian countryside, with an organic pool and a community like no other.
Hot yoga originated in Los Angeles in the 1970s through the lineage of Bishnu Ghosh — one of the foremost physiological masters of yoga in the 20th century. The practice was developed to bring the healing power of yoga to the West, with heat introduced to replicate the conditions of India.
The method comprises a precise sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, practised over 75 minutes in a room heated to approximately 40°C. The sequence was designed as "preventative medicine" — to increase circulation to every part of the body, lubricate the joints, stimulate the organs, and eliminate stagnation.
As the body of scientific evidence grows, so does our understanding of the benefits. Clinical studies have shown significant improvements in cardiovascular health, muscular strength and flexibility, metabolic function, and mental wellbeing — including meaningful reductions in symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Our dedicated studio in Skelsmergh, Kendal was purpose-built for Ghosh-lineage yoga. Beautiful parquet floors, full-wall mirrors, and a carefully calibrated heating system create the ideal conditions for your practice.
Parquet floors, wall-to-wall mirrors, professional heating — everything designed around the practice.
We keep class sizes small so that every student gets the attention and space they need to flourish.
An extraordinary finishing touch — our natural swimming pool is available after every class. Bring a towel and swimwear.
Nestled in the hills outside Kendal, arriving here feels like an escape from the ordinary. The setting alone is worth it.
The studio is available for private hire. Ideal for yoga teachers, wellness events, workshops, or private classes.
From your very first class, you'll feel at home. Our students range from total beginners to long-time practitioners.
Yoga has always been about more than the mat. If finances are a barrier, or you simply love the idea of a fair exchange, I'd love to hear from you.
Hot Yoga Cumbria is a one-woman operation. I run the studio, the house, and the land entirely by myself — including extensive vegetable beds and a beautiful growing space that keep me busy year-round.
In the spirit of karma yoga — the yoga of selfless action — I offer a skills swap: come and help in the garden, growing space, or around the property, and I'll give you yoga in return. Gardening is where I need the most help, but I'm open to any skill. If you have something to offer, get in touch and we'll figure it out.
This isn't charity — it's community. The practice of yoga asks us to show up for each other. If you can dig, plant, weed, build, cook, fix, or create, there's likely a class with your name on it.
Get in TouchWeeding, planting, harvesting, growing and garden work — always needed and always appreciated.
Building, fixing, maintaining — there's always something on the list.
Have something else to offer? Just ask. Every exchange is individual.
Absolutely. All classes are suitable for all levels, including complete beginners. Many of our regular students started with no yoga experience at all. Just let Fran know it's your first class when you book, and she'll make sure you're set up for a great experience.
The studio is heated to approximately 40°C with controlled humidity. This replicates the climate of India, where yoga as a physical practice was developed. The heat allows the muscles to relax and stretch safely, and supports the body's natural detoxification processes.
A yoga mat, a large towel (to place on your mat), a smaller towel for your face, and plenty of water. If you'd like to use the organic pool after class, bring sliders and a swimming costume. We recommend wearing breathable, minimal clothing — yoga shorts or a swimsuit-style top are ideal.
We suggest arriving 10–15 minutes before class, especially for your first visit. This gives you time to settle in, get changed, and have a chat with Fran before you begin.
We recommend not eating a heavy meal for at least 2–3 hours before class. A light snack is fine. Staying well-hydrated in the hours leading up to class makes a big difference — drink plenty of water beforehand.
Yes. The studio is available for private hire and we welcome enquiries from yoga teachers, workshop facilitators, and wellness practitioners. Private classes can also be arranged for individuals or small groups. Contact Fran to discuss.
